The challenge facing airports amidst rapid increases in passenger numbers

The number of passengers being transported by airlines around the world has more than doubled in the last six years with recent estimations indicating that demand for air transport will increase by around 4.3% on average per annum for the next 20 years. It’s expected that in a little more than a decade, 200,000 flights will be taking off and landing each day around the world meeting the need for rapid transportation and facilitating the need for increased volumes of air cargo and tourism. 

The challenge for airports amidst this rapid growth is to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience.  

 

Istanbul Airport is one of the busiest airports in Europe and the 7th busiest airport in the world in terms of total international passenger numbers. In 2022, more than 64.5 million passengers used the airport. Passenger numbers have increased in 2023: in October 2023, more than 6.6 million passengers utilised the airport, up 11.18% compared to October 2022.

 

Serving 114 countries, including being a hub for Turkish Airlines, Istanbul Airport services primarily international flights (89.9%), with the balance made up of domestic flights. A total of 41,711 flights passed through the airport in November 2023.
